#asktoni at sipgate - A crazy sommelier and a great Riesling party

Dusseldorf is definitely one of the most dedicated Riesling places in Europe. But once a year, this town goes especially crazy. It is the week of ProWein – the world’s biggest trade fair for wine and spirits. Always around March. If you haven’t been there you should not miss it.
But it is not the fair itself that is the most fun. It is the parties around it. If you ever decide to visit ProWein, please plan for additional two or three days around the actual date. Then, the city of Dusseldorf turns into a wine-party-city.
This year, a new form of party was born. And as we had so much fun, we definitely needed to share it with you. It is organized by a slightly crazy but even more irresistible sommelier called Antonio Askitis (short version: AskToni). Toni’s passion for throwing great parties can only be beaten by his unbelievable passion for Riesling. A true “pro” in all the details.
That is why Toni invests time, money and a lot of energy to bring thousands of bottles of rare wines to a pop-up restaurant place called “Sipgate”. The result is an amazing party. We had so much fun. Every table of 12 people had their own sommelier to support the wine delivery. The whole thing was accompanied by five courses of delicious food.
Surrounded by wine fans from Dusseldorf, all over Germany and all around the world, we could have spent hours just studying the wine list. With so many good Riesling company around us, we immediately started sharing the great wines. At the end, we tried 20 drinks and found ourselves in the best conversations.
