“Mythos Mosel” – A myth and a Riesling journey
Bernkastel-Kues, May 25-27, 2018
It is not yet a long century’s tradition, but a great event for Riesling fans. The “Mythos Mosel” gives you the opportunity to cover the best of river Moselle in just two days. The program can be intense, but if you manage it right it is a weekend you won’t forget too fast.
Technically, you have the chance to taste hundreds of wines from 120 producers. If that is your program the Mythos Mosel is hard work. We decided for a different approach – the relaxed version. That way the event will be a great mixture of the Mythos Mosel and the beauty of everything the river Moselle has to offer – great restaurants, beautiful landscapes and fantastic wineries. Our personal wrap-up:
Friday, 8pm. Our choice not to go to the official opening event at Schloss Lieser but instead visit two Michelin star chef Thomas Schanz in his restaurant was a winner for the relaxation aspect of our tour. The wine list of this restaurant offers not only the most delicious Rieslings from all German wine regions, the prices are also quite low. And the food is just fantastic. For good reason, Thomas counts as one of the top chefs in Germany.
Saturday, 9am. We officially start our “Mythos Mosel” journey with a great Kabinett tasting at Selbach-Oster. The winery is one of the main hosts of this year’s Mythos Mosel event. The tasting offers us a very rare opportunity: You usually don’t have the chance to drink old Kabinett because usually the wines are drunken when they are young. To learn about the aging potential of Kabinett in such a compact format was truly impressive. A great start!
Saturday, 2pm. After we have seen pictures from people queuing up in long lines in front of winery Markus Molitor we decide to slow down and spend the rest of the afternoon in the middle of the great and beautiful vineyards of the Moselle. If you ever have the feeling of meeting too many people in the same spot this is the perfect place to chill.
Saturday, 7pm. Our first day ends with the first ever “Loosen and Friends Party” at winery Dr. Loosen. A beautiful place, a perfect summer night and great company opened the stage for interesting conversations about Rieslings. A long list of young wines for drinking and old wines for trying from wineries like Maximin Grünhaus, Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken, Ansgar Clüsserath, Philipp Wittmann, Fritz Haag, Heymann Löwenstein, and Joh. Jos. Prüm were just the perfect company for a beautiful Moselle night.
Sunday, 11am. We decided to start our real tour through the wineries. We visited three – Schloss Lieser, Fritz Haag and Willi Schäfer. But you need to know that every winery has three guest winemakers each. After trying 6 to 8 wines of twelve producers we developed a sense for the Mythos Mosel.
Sunday, 8pm. A bit tired but happy we entered one of the secret little Moselle restaurants that have old beauties on their wine list. Ending the night with a most amazing Joh. Jos. Prüm 1964 feinste Auslese Riesling from the Zeltinger-Wehlener Sonnuhr we were definitely in Riesling heaven.
